Artist Statement
Hey! I'm Natalie, I am a jewellery artist. I make fine art jewellery with the goal of both sharing and funding my broader artistic practice. I'm still finding my way, but here's how it's been taking shape so far:
- My work uses garden arts as a way to talk about ecologies and interconnectedness as originally described in East Asian arts & philosophy.
- I do this mostly in precious material because of its natural relationship with the idea of material value and reuse.
- I believe that engaging with garden arts can help shape our collective response towards large-scale, correlated issues such as colonialist thinking, hyperconsumption, and climate change.
I'm still working out a better narrative experience on this topic for you all, but for now, you can learn more through the linked readings above.
I started thinking about all of this after reading How to Do Nothing by Jenny Odell, one of the absolute best things I've ever read on our current state of ecological damage; discussed in a totally non-depressing way that focuses on actual, tangible, daily-living things we can do together moving forward. Everything I've tried to work on since has been a natural extension of what I learned there, so for the original ideas and some really excellent writing, give her a read there :)
