· 100% Canadian gold.

· Shiny, mirror-polished finish.

· The centre sapphire is 0.1 carats. The visible face of the sapphire measures about 4.6 mm by 6.3 mm.

· The six-sided bezel at the centre measures about 5.4 mm by 8.8 mm.

· Band width (from the top to bottom of the band) is 1.9 mm.

· Band thickness (from the inside of the ring to the outside) is about 0.95 mm.

The sapphire in this ring was originally mined in the Luc Yen region; purchased directly from a woman-owned gem business in Vietnam. It is an unheated and untreated misty white sapphire, with rutile inclusions that give it a faint lavender or bluish glow under direct light.

The sapphire contains two minor imperfections. There is a small chip to the back of the stone, invisible when worn. On the face of the stone, there are two thin scratches, visible only under magnification (they cannot be felt with a fingernail). These tiny scratches appear to be the result of the inner crystals (rutile inclusions) reaching the surface of the stone.

I believe that these imperfections were caused by the pressure applied during stone-setting: given the delicate size of the stone, the force of setting caused the presence of internal crystal structures to be pushed upward through the sapphire, eventually reaching the surface.

Fortunately, such surface-reaching inclusions often remain stable (not damaging the stone further), as long as there is no more extreme pressure applied to the ring (the type of pressure used during goldsmithing, rather than day-to-day wear). For this reason, I also recommend against having the ring resized.

Though I have been quite hesitant to bring an imperfect piece to the collection, I hope you will still find it worthwhile! For months I had intended to cut this ring apart and recycle the metal - but every time I return to it, I still find it so beautiful and can't bear to take it apart. As with all my work, it is always made with the finest materials and deepest care; only this time with a few small scars, and a bit of a story to tell.

Commercial sapphires (the kind you normally see in deep, clear blue) typically go through a heat treatment to improve the clarity and colour of the stones.

Sapphires which remain untreated often appear more pastel-like, with a soft inner appearance that have a shimmering, misty, or opalescent effect. The visual effect of untreated sapphires is caused by the presence of needle-shaped crystals (rutile inclusions), which reflect and diffuse light in unexpected ways through the stone. These stones often have much more visual depth, with the dreamy appearance of sunlight through clouds or water.
